A faucet stops working.
A shutoff valve snaps when someone finally tries to turn it.
A water heater fails years earlier than expected.
Most homeowners assume these are unrelated problems.
In Las Vegas, they are often symptoms of the same hidden culprit: hard water.
After more than 25 years working in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and home repair, I have seen hard water quietly destroy thousands of dollars worth of fixtures, valves, appliances, and plumbing systems.
Hard water is one of the biggest hidden causes of premature plumbing failure in Las Vegas homes.

This article is the other half. It is what I see once the scale has already done its work: the parts that fail, what the repair actually involves, and how I decide whether a component is worth saving or whether you are better off replacing the fixture.
That decision is where most homeowners lose money β either by replacing a whole fixture that only needed an inexpensive internal part, or by rebuilding something that was never going to hold.
What a hard water call usually looks like
A homeowner recently called because a bathroom faucet had almost no water pressure.
They assumed the faucet had failed.
The faucet was not the real problem.
Years of mineral buildup had clogged the aerator, restricted the supply line, and partially seized the shutoff valve below the sink.
What looked like a simple faucet issue was actually evidence of hard water damage occurring throughout the home.
That is why I do not just look at the fixture that failed.
I look at the system around it.
1. Seized angle stops under sinks and toilets
This is the single most common way a small hard water job turns into a bigger one.
I show up to swap a faucet or a fill valve. Before anything else I reach for the angle stop under the cabinet. Sometimes it turns a quarter of the way and stops. Sometimes the handle spins freely and nothing happens behind it. Sometimes it does turn, and then it starts weeping around the stem, because the packing has not moved in years and the scale was effectively the only thing sealing it.
Now the fixture swap has a prerequisite before it can even start.
Repair or replace: almost always replace. I do not try to rebuild an old multi-turn stop that is packed with scale. It fights you the whole way and it comes back. While the water is already off, a new quarter-turn stop is the honest call.
Why it matters beyond the repair: this is the valve you need at two in the morning when a supply line lets go. If it will not turn on a calm afternoon with me standing in front of it, it will not turn then either.
2. Water heaters that are already past saving
By the time a Las Vegas homeowner calls me about the water heater, the question is usually not "can this be serviced." It is "how much life is left in it."
The tell is sound. A heater that pops, rumbles, or sounds like it is boiling gravel is firing through a sediment layer sitting on the bottom of the tank.
Repair or replace: it depends almost entirely on age and on whether the tank has ever been flushed.
- Flushed regularly, still reasonably young, drain valve opens β servicing is worth it.
- Never flushed, well into its second half, drain valve seized solid β I will tell you to put the money toward replacement instead. Draining a heavily sedimented tank through a valve that has never been opened is how you find out the valve was the only thing not leaking.
Where I stop: I handle the fixture-level side of this. Gas connections, venting, and permit-level work go to a licensed plumber, and I will say so rather than improvise.
3. Faucets and showerheads: usually the cheapest fix in the house
This is the one homeowners most often over-buy on.
Weak flow at a single faucet is normally an aerator packed with scale, or a cartridge that has gone stiff and gritty. Both are internal parts. Neither one requires a new faucet.
Repair or replace: repair, in most cases. Aerators and showerheads clean up or swap out easily. Cartridges are a straightforward change on most common brands.
I replace the whole fixture when the body itself is pitted, when the finish is failing anyway, or when it is an off-brand unit I cannot get a cartridge for β that last one is the real reason to replace a faucet, not the scale.
The mistake I see: somebody replaces the entire faucet, the flow is great for a year, then it drops off again. The new faucet was never the fix. The water did not change.
4. Toilets: cheap parts, repeated visits
Fill valves, flappers, and tank seals all wear faster here. A toilet that runs at random, fills slowly, or will not shut off cleanly after a flush is usually telling you about a fill valve or a flapper seat, not about the toilet.
Repair or replace: repair the internals. These are inexpensive parts and a quick job.
The point at which I start suggesting a new toilet is when we are on the third or fourth round of tank parts, or when the tank-to-bowl hardware and the supply connection are all corroding together. At that stage you are paying repeatedly to keep an old fixture in service.
5. Appliances: know when it is not a plumbing repair
Dishwashers, washing machines, ice makers, and refrigerator water systems all take on scale, and they do get replaced earlier than they should here.
Repair or replace: I am honest about scope on these. I can deal with the supply side β the valve feeding it, the line running to it, the shutoff behind it. What I do not do is pretend an appliance's internal control or heating circuit is a handyman repair. That is an appliance tech, and sending you to one is cheaper for you than me learning on your machine.
6. Weak flow at more than one fixture
One slow faucet is a fixture problem. Several slow fixtures at once is a system problem.
When flow is weak throughout the house, I stop working on the fixture and start working backward β aerators, then stops, then supply lines, then what is feeding them. Scale narrows the path gradually, and in older plumbing it combines with corrosion at the fittings.
Repair or replace: this is the one case where I will not give you a verdict from an article. Restriction in the branch lines behind a wall or under a slab is a different job with a different trade attached to it, and it needs eyes on it before anyone quotes anything.
How I decide: repair the part or replace the fixture
After enough of these, the decision comes down to four questions.
- Is the failed piece a serviceable internal part, or the body itself? Cartridges, aerators, fill valves and flappers are parts. A pitted faucet body or a sedimented tank is not.
- Can I still get parts for it? A common brand with available cartridges is worth repairing. A discontinued builder-grade unit often is not, regardless of condition.
- How many times have we already been here? First repair, fix the part. Third repair on the same fixture, you are renting the fixture from your plumbing.
- Is the water still hard? This is the one people skip. If nothing upstream changed, a repaired part is on the same clock the old one was.

Why I look at more than the part you called about
If one component in the house is scaled up, the rest of them have been drinking the same water for the same number of years.
So when I have a cabinet open anyway, I check the things that are already in front of me: the stop on the other side of the vanity, the supply line and its fittings, the shutoffs behind the toilet in that bathroom. It costs you nothing while I am already there, and it is how you find the seized valve on a scheduled visit instead of during an emergency.
That is not an upsell. Half the time the answer is "these are fine, leave them alone." The value is knowing which ones are not.
Typical repair costs in Las Vegas
Prices vary with the scope of work, the age of your plumbing, and whether hard water has caused secondary damage.
These ranges are not quotes, but they help homeowners understand what is common:
- Water heater replacement, tank: $900-$1,800
- Tankless water heater replacement: $1,500-$3,500
- Shutoff valve replacement: $149-$350 per valve
- Faucet cartridge or fixture repair: $149-$300
- Toilet tank component repair: $149-$250
- Appliance repairs or early replacement: varies widely
An on-site inspection can determine whether scale has caused related damage such as corroded fittings, restricted supply lines, or access issues that increase costs.

Most of what hard water ruins is fixture-level work β valves, supply lines, faucets, fill valves and traps. That is the everyday side of plumbing repairs. Anything behind a wall, under the slab, or at permit level goes to a licensed plumber instead, and gas or venting work on a water heater goes with it.
If you are not sure which side of that line your problem sits on, take a photo, shut off the nearest stop if it is safe to do so, and ask. Working that out is a short conversation. Finding out mid-repair is not.
Final thoughts
Hard water does not usually break something outright. It shortens the odds on every part in the house at the same time, and then you meet the failures one at a time, in whatever order they happen to arrive.
The repairs themselves are mostly small. What decides whether they stay small is catching the pattern β noticing that this is the third fill valve, or that the stop under the sink has not turned in years β and being willing to spend on the right thing instead of the visible thing.

Worth saying too: the water is only one of the things working on your house out here. Heat, sun and dry air are doing the same slow job to your seals, doors and exterior finishes on exactly the same schedule. I put all of it in one place in everything else this climate wears out.
